Be the change. Volunteer.
We are looking for volunteers that can donate some of their time, while at Naughty in N'awlins, to help families and the City of New Orleans rebuild. We often see devestation and tragedy on T.V., but when do you get a chance to make a difference? Well, this is your chance, you can make a difference. Join us for this special day of caring and lend a hand that will make a difference in a family, or many family's lives. We will be joining Hands On New Orleans (www.handsonneworleans.org) to make this a memorable experience that you will never forget.
What to expect
Depending on that week's projects, you may be assigned to paint, build, sand or even gut a home. You may get a chance to renovate a school, a park or one of the following projects:
◊ The Hands On New Orleans construction team works daily with homeowners still displaced by Hurricane Katrina.
◊ Working at distribution centers (i.e. food banks)
◊ Assisting at a local Animal Shelter
◊ Beautification projects (i.e. murals, trash/debris removal, and park clean-up)
◊ Construction in collaboration with other local non-profits
◊ Green Projects
◊ Wetland Restoration
Volunteers will need to meet at 7:30 am and work until 3 pm. Hands on New Orleans will supply the transportation to and from the project site and box lunches. They will have all the tools, safety equipment and a staff on hand that will lead the project and supervise our efforts.
What Skills Are Needed
"What if I can't paint?" With every project, there are plenty of jobs, even for those unskilled at construction. There will be project supervisors on hand to make sure that everyone gets used no matter what skill sets they bring to the team. If you can pick up and carry supplies, you can assist someone that can paint. If you come with a sense of adventure and a willingness to help, we promise that you will end the day with a great amount of accomplishment.
Does it cost anything?
Yes, there is a $100 charge per volunteer. This will cover the cost of transportation, supplies, lunch and the rest of the funding for that day's project. We did find some organizations that didn't charge anything, but you had to buy your own lunch, get to and from the job site on your own, buy gloves, protective wear and a variety of other unknown costs. We thought that the Hands On New Orleans organization had the best set up for our group because they also handled all of the co-ordination and project planning.
So How Do I get Started?
Easy, just e-mail us at Volunteer@FrenchConnectionEvents.com, give us your names, which day(s) you would like to volunteer and we will take care of the rest. We will keep you updated on our assigned project once we know how many volunteers we will have.
Get connected. Get more done. Make a difference. Have fun. Be Hands On.
About Hands On New Orleans:
Since Katrina and Rita, Hands On New Orleans has mobilized over 5,000 volunteers to provide over 400,000 hours of service, deploying about 100 volunteers a day, on average. Hands On volunteers execute home reconstruction and community revitalization projects, including: supporting the reopening and ongoing needs of schools, facilitating mural art projects throughout the city, building capacity in other non-profits, and addressing the special needs of marginalized communities. These efforts have generated an estimated $5 million in economic benefits for New Orleans
Hands On New Orleans has earned both local credibility and national media recognition, and is now starting the process of transitioning to a locally owned and managed independent Hands On Action Center. Hands On New Orleans will help.
